New data and the overview of dragonfly fauna (Insecta: Odonata) of Nevesinjsko polje

Abstract

This paper provides the first overview of the dragonfly fauna of Nevesinjsko polje – one of the largest karst poljes in Bosnia and Herzegovina – and two small adjacent poljes, Lukavačko and Slato. Field surveys undertaken from 2012 to 2020 resulted in 40 species being recorded (63% of all Odonata fauna species recorded in the country). Of these, 12 species are reported for the first time for the study area. The most significant is the first record of Coenagrion ornatum (Selys, 1850), a species of European conservation concern, upon Nevesinjsko polje. The collected data represents an important contribution to the knowledge of the dragonfly fauna of karst poljes, which themselves represent biodiversity hotspots of the Dinaric Karst region.
